“Oksana and Bob” is a documentary that intertwines the lives of Oksana Shachko, a Ukrainian feminist icon, and Bob, an Australian psychologist and lawyer. The film follows Bob’s transformation as he grapples with the emotional and intellectual challenges arising from Oksana’s radical activism. Why do a select few people have the courage to risk their lives for what they believe while the rest of us hide behind the safety of our lives, and our own rhetoric? And if we truly connect with the suffering of millions of exploited, disenfranchised and hopeless people, is there any ethical way to continue to exist in this world? Through interviews, archival footage, and intimate reflections as Bob travels from Australia to retrace the key moments of Oksana’s life, the documentary explores Oksana’s rise from a village in Ukraine to become a global activist, the personal toll of her activism, and the impact she had, and continues to have, on those who admired her. Bob’s journey takes him from passive admiration to active engagement with social justice, reflecting on his own choices. The film is a lasting legacy for Oksana, and how real personal connection with someone like Oksana can inspire us to challenge and overcome our own fears. In exploring these themes, the film offers viewers the opportunity to confront their own decisions, choose personal transformation, and take meaningful action toward promoting equality and social justice.
