Who’s ready for more bad news? In today’s world, where every tragedy is instantly broadcast directly into our living rooms (TV), laps (laptop), and/or hands (smartphone), it is incredibly easy to go through life believing that there is more bad than good in this world, that there always will be, and be overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness.
Francis Bacon once said that for light to shine brightly, darkness must be present. Instead of feeling daunted by so many crises in the world, we aim to inspire hope and change by spotlighting strengths, opportunities, and examples of what is working. Our six-episode docuseries structure will address a different social issue each episode and uplift the audience with examples of those making strides against adversity. Personal stories take center stage each issue featuring survivors and advocates against complex subjects involving many socio-cultural factors like child marriage, mental health, and female genital mutilation.
For each social issue we address, we begin by researching and seeking out Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) who work on the ground on the issue and have taken a non-traditional approach with proven results. This structure allows us to be introduced and earn the trust of several compelling subjects who are brave enough to share their stories. Each story would be featured in a separate episode to allow us to explore the complexities surrounding the social issue, properly tell their story, and focus on solutions currently working and give the viewers the opportunity to act. A celebrity host or narration is woven throughout the episode to guide the audience through the complexities of the social issue, however the personal stories of the subjects, the work they are doing, and the positive strides they have made will be the focus.
Presenting these stories as a series allows viewers to dip in and out of the topics they are most interested in, allowing them to explore a topic without becoming overwhelmed.
