Synopsis
Men’s netball is at a turning point.
In a sporting landscape where homophobia remains a barrier, the Kelpies are forging a different way forward. With the highest percentage of openly LGBTQIA+ male players in Australian sporting history, they’re reshaping perceptions of masculinity in sport.
Set against the 2025 Trans-Tasman Cup, Underdogs follows the Kelpies fight for legitimacy, and the resistance they face; from governing bodies to online backlash over their viral Fast5 ‘Bye Bye Bye’ dance. This film is as much about joy as it is about struggle, blending high-energy match footage with deeply personal storytelling.
With minimal support from Netball Australia and players funding their own participation, Underdogs is a rally cry for inclusivity, proving that sport isn’t just about winning—it’s about belonging.
Story
Underdogs is anchored by the 2025 Trans-Tasman Cup – a four-game series between Australia and New Zealand, held alongside the Australian Diamonds tour. With both nations considered global powerhouses in netball, their rivalry provides a compelling, high-stakes backdrop to the story.
This championship forms the spine of the documentary, giving audiences front-row access to the intensity and passion of international competition. But beyond the games, Underdogs dives deeper – following key players across Australia in the lead-up to the tour. From early-morning training sessions to work shifts and family dinners, we reveal the day-to-day realities of athletes balancing elite sport with full-time lives.
The film will be intimate, energetic, and character-driven – blending fly-on-the-wall observational footage with dynamic netball action. Through this lens, we not only capture the physical demands of the sport, but also the humour, resilience and camaraderie that define this team.
