‘The Real Meaning of Pleasure is a 70 minute observational documentary that is driven by the blooming relationship between young neurodiverse filmmaker Laneikka, their 69 year old Autistic uncle Wayne and Laneikka’s neurodivergent mother Cathy as they try to reconnect as family and bring Wayne pleasure right at the end of his life in their own neurodiverse way. This film explores how the reconnection of a family can heal trauma and make life worth living.
Laneikka Denne is a queer youth advocate, writer and filmmaker from Western Sydney. Laneikka wrote their debut play DEAD SKIN at seventeen, which was awarded the State Theatre Company x Flinders University Young Playwright’s Award and premiered at KXT, published by Australian Plays. Laneikka is the recipient of the Diversity Entertainment Creative Mentorship 2022, where DEAD SKIN will be performed in LA and Off-broadway in NYC while Laneikka works on a feature film adaption of the play with Diversity Entertainment, LLC. Laneikka’s debut short MITSUKU was bought by ScreenJam Productions in the UK and their other short screenplay OI was awarded Open Screenplay’s Best Short Drama Award in 2022. She regularly directs both documentary and fictional shorts for the Young Actors Assembly, an organisation where teenagers pitch and write their own films for teenage audiences. As a young person herself, Laneikka is a strong advocate for art created by young people for people. This sparked their decision to create a youth writing initiative called THE MONOLOGUE COLLECTIVE where teenagers develop monologues for teenagers to perform for the HSC Drama, supported by Create NSW, the Rodney Seaborn Foundation, Australian Plays Transform, CWA NSW, PYT Fairfield, and KXT. This program is touring with Arts on Tour in 2024 and is published by Play Lab to schools around NSW. Young queer humans are at the heart of all of Laneikka’s work, as Laneikka seeks to represent them with agency and intrigue.
