Reflect Her

In 121 years, there has been one female Australian Prime Minister. Despite the 2022 election delivering the most diverse governmental representation the country has ever seen, there remains much to do to achieve gender equality in the political sphere. Australia ranks equal first place for women’s educational attainment yet dropped from 15 to 50 on the global gender equality leaderboard (NZ ranks 4) and our political empowerment is in 54th place, between North Macedonia at 53 and Liberia at 55 (2021 World Economic Forum Global Equality Index).

Australian politics has been ravaged by allegations of sexual assault, sexism and toxic masculinity. Is it surprising that less than 1% of Australian girls dream of political careers?

Following a tenacious group of diverse young women demanding #enoughisenough, this film will shed light on important work being done to inspire the next generation of female politicians; ignite change; and build a more representative future for all Australians.

Following recent sexual assault allegations and an enduring culture of sexism and misogyny, too many young women think the idea of entering politics is unsafe and scary. Our goal is to help make political careers accessible to women; to commend young women forging political careers in spite of the obstacles; and to inspire and empower women to pursue leadership roles. Ideally, the film will contribute to an increase in female leadership and a future in which female Prime Ministers are common.

Short term: To address the urgent need to resolve Australia’s misrepresentation of its people in Parliament and to provide young women with the empowering narrative that they are capable of pursuing leadership roles.

Medium term: For the film to become an educational tool for schools and communities. To encourage government bodies, philanthropists, businesses and not-for-profit organisations to support young emerging female politicians and community leaders.

Long term: To inspire more opportunities and pathways for young women to learn about and enter political or leadership careers. To inspire young women and schools to participate in political programs such as Jasiri’s Young Women Takeover Parliament program.

We are currently collaborating with and filming state and national Young Women Takeover Parliament programs run by Jasiri Australia. Jasiri has established media relationships, social media followers and connections with politicians and leaders which will amplify reach and exposure. Young Women Takeover Parliament currently operates in NSW, ACT and SA. The program is bipartisan and aims to inspire more young women to enter politics which is in alignment with the film’s vision and goals. We have unlimited and exclusive access to the founder of Jasiri, Caitlin Figueiredo, her programs and candidates, as well as access to the members of parliament participating in the initiative.

As a team, we also have extensive experience in film marketing and publicity. This in-house expertise means we understand audiences and know how to reach them in an effective and efficient manner. We will not have to outsource a campaign as we have valuable resources and skills readily accessible.

We want viewers to:

– Recognise gender disparities and their own gender bias within the political realm
– Support educational programs such as Young Women Takeover Parliament
– Participate in educational programs such as Young Women Takeover Parliament (or encourage female friends and family to do so)
– Create opportunities for emerging female politicians and community leaders to thrive
– Promote the film via word of mouth, social media and reviews
