‘Out of the Mud’ is a feature-length social / environmental-impact documentary that takes audiences on an immersive journey behind closed doors and into the minds and hearts of those whose lives were upended by the most catastrophic flood in modern Australian history in February of 2022. Through the eyes of our unlikely heroes we witness firsthand the devastation, loss and confusion these disasters leave in their wake. But as the story unfolds our unlikely heroes rise just like flood waters, buoyed by community generosity, emerging with wisdom, insight and courage.
But on the other side of this disaster lies a new horizon — it is the innovation, resilience, and wisdom that we glean from heartache and ruin. From devastation to regeneration — this story follows the unfolding recovery of the region through the eyes of its survivors, advocates, and community leaders and places the Northern Rivers flood crisis within the broader context of climate change, land degradation, and disaster preparedness nationally. Act 3 of our film explores some of the most innovative and transformative solutions emerging in the aftermath of this disaster —painting an achievable and tangible picture of possibility and regeneration post disaster.
