Lime Cordiale: On The Road To A Better Tour

As the global climate crisis worsens, industries need to adapt and the Australian music scene is one of them. While Australians relish live entertainment, few realise the significant emissions generated behind the scenes. A typical national tour of 15 shows around Australia could generate a total of 28 tonnes of carbon emissions, which equates to the yearly emissions of an entire household. And this is just from one band, on one tour, in one country. Moreover, increasingly, music events in Australia are being cancelled, relocated, postponed or otherwise impacted by extreme weather events due to soaring temperatures, threat of bushfires and emergency floods. This documentary confronts the challenge of fostering sustainability in music touring, advocating for increased transparency and accountability among musicians, tour promoters, venues, and merchandisers to address the climate crisis head-on and use the power of music to promote the cultural change needed to create a better future.

Through the lens of Oli and Louis, Australian music lovers get to enjoy captivating performances while reflecting on music’s impact on our planet. With Oli and Louis, audiences will be empowered to recognise the power of their collective action in driving meaningful change, and that every little bit counts. As part of our impact campaign, a sustainable music touring toolkit and study guide resources will be made available. Echoing the band’s actions highlighted in the film, the audience will have access to information on ethical finance, plant based lifestyle, environmental campaigns and electrification. Additionally, the band will produce a blueprint spotlighting greener ways of touring to engage more artists in taking similar actions, including carbon calculators, petitions, green artists guides, templates and handbooks.

In the short-term, we hope to raise social awareness and educate the public about the environmental impact of live music entertainment, including touring, music festivals, venues, streaming and merchandising.

In the long-term, we want the audience to start adapting more sustainable practices in their daily lives. We want audiences to support bands, venues and promoters driving change, engage in climate policy discourse, and be proactive about industry and government accountability going forward.

We have been working closely with the band Lime Cordiale, and will have access to their network of support, including their extensive and engaged fanbase and established commercial partners, amplifying our social impact message. Mushroom Studios is part of the Mushroom Group which is Australia and New Zealand’s largest music and entertainment group. When engaging the community, the social impact team will leverage their existing relationships within the entertainment industry (Frontier Touring, Support Act, Always Live, Love Police ATM) and social impact organisations (FEAT.Live, Green Music, GreenPeace, Minderoo). Both Lime Cordiale and Mushroom Group will effectively reach music fans and the younger generations. Furthermore, live performances by the band will engage fans and brings people together in a time when we need connection more than ever.
