Synopsis

In the Wake of Giants takes viewers deep into the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth, where migrating whales pass through waters that remain largely unprotected. Conservationist Jono Allen embarks on a journey to safeguard these vital migration routes, not through policy, but through his deep connection with the ocean’s giants.

As unregulated tourism and increasing human activity threaten fragile marine environments, Jono sets out to learn from places that have successfully protected their waters. In Western Australia’s Nyinggulu (Ningaloo), he finds inspiration in a marine conservation success story, where local communities and wildlife thrive together. But when he travels to a remote island in Indonesia, where whales are still hunted as part of an unbroken tradition, he is forced to confront the most difficult questions of his journey: Who decides what is ethical? Can conservation ever work if it challenges generations of culture and survival?

Disillusioned, he turns to Tonga, where a once-whaling nation has transformed into a sanctuary for humpback whales. Meeting those who helped make this shift possible, he finds hope that change is not only possible, but that it must come from within the communities who depend on the ocean.

Through breathtaking cinematography and raw, real-time encounters, In the Wake of Giants explores the fragile balance between tradition, conservation, and the responsibility we all hold as travelers and stewards of the ocean. It challenges us to rethink our impact and asks: How do we protect what we love before it’s too late?

Story

For Jono Allen, the ocean isn’t just a place to protect – it’s where he feels most connected to life. In the Wake of Giants follows his journey through the Coral Triangle, a region where shallow tropical waters plunge into deep, thriving ecosystems, creating a rare meeting place for marine life and local communities. Through stunning visuals and honest storytelling, the film explores Jono’s efforts to work with fishermen and local advocates to protect these waters while finding sustainable opportunities for those who depend on the ocean. This is more than a conservation story – it’s about one person’s relationship with the ocean’s giants and how his dedication can inspire viewers to travel more thoughtfully and respect the world beneath the waves.
