We are producing an independent, not-for-profit documentary designed to challenge and reshape how Australians perceive international students and Asian immigrants. By featuring the inspiring stories of six remarkable Asian immigrants who began their journeys in Australia as international students or new skilled migrants, this documentary sheds light on their contributions, resilience, and the invaluable role they play in shaping modern Australia.
The film has four key objectives:
1. Recognising multiculturalism as a vital national asset: The documentary aims to spark a broader conversation about the significance of multiculturalism as a core pillar of Australia’s identity—one that has been underestimated for too long.
2. Encouraging Australians to not just embrace multiculturalism but to not single it out as a means of identifying Australians differently based on their origins. After watching the documentary, we hope to show how Australians are not defined by their backgrounds but by their united dedication to Australia and their equal sense of belonging to it. The documentary seeks to inspire average Australians to see multiculturalism not just as a concept, but as a lived reality that strengthens our nation.
3. Inspiring leaders and decision-makers to support diverse talent: Highlighting the achievements of these individuals will demonstrate the immense value of culturally and linguistically diverse talent, without seeing them as “different” but as multifaceted Australians.
4. Promoting a better understanding of Australia’s international education system, in that it isn’t a “cash cow” but a natural talent attractor which ultimately supports Australia’s workforce and labour pool.
Through powerful storytelling and authentic voices, this project seeks to provoke thought, inspire change, and celebrate the richness of Australia’s cultural diversity and for Australians not to view it as something “foreign” but very much within their lifestyles.
