Synopsis
Facing the Numbers is a cinematic exploration into the human stories behind the appalling statistics of First Nations disadvantage in the criminal justice system in Australia. Giving faces to these numbers highlights the systemic racism experienced by Aboriginal people that sees us over-represented in these systems.
Grounded in truth-telling, the series showcases the remarkable strength and resilience of First Nations people who are still here — protecting Country, culture and community — despite deep institutional and systemic racism.
Story
FTN dramatises the personal testimonies of Aboriginal experiences with systems of oppression. Driven by the idea that people with lived experience are best placed to design solutions to the challenges they encounter, FTN draws on raw, compelling recollections to explore the stories of Uncle Michael ‘Widdy’ Welsh (Wongaibon), Geoffrey Johnson (Wiradjuri), Kylie Hampton (Gurindji), Matthew Coe (Wiradjuri) & Mark Mason Snr (Gomeroi).
Utilising abstract and experimental approaches enables FTN to depict individual experiences authentically. For example, Mark Mason Snr’s story is told by his children to reflect the police’s erasure of the moments leading to the fatal shooting that forever distorted the family’s memory of their father, whilst Matthew Coe’s harrowing account of police brutality is expressed through contemporary dance, choreographed by award-winning Wiradjuri choreographer, Beau Dean Riley Smith.
FTN is underscored by original music from renowned composer, Vincent Goodyer.
