Melba: ‘Many are called but few are chosen!’
DIVA – the Dame Nellie Melba Story is an intimate documentary on the grandest of stages that will reveal the blazing career of an opera singer – a story about what is gained and what is lost through the dedication to an unrivalled talent; the story of a diva who paved the way for the musical superstars of today. Dame Nellie Melba was the most famous woman of her time – but an artist for all times.
This is the sumptuous story of a diva; but also unashamedly a modern story that makes the connections between Melba’s time and our own – we will show how Melba’s life resonates with modern sensibilities in a range of areas – celebrity, fame, power and, in particular the barriers to women of talent succeeding in a male dominated industry.
Rare archival material, enhanced audio recordings and dramatisations will be interlaced with interviews with opera stars and biographers, and we will also hear from social historians who will delve into the threads that connect fame, power and tragedy across the years. The intergenerational nature of Nellie’s experience will shed new light on an old story, and highlight the enduring truth behind one of our most iconic figures in history.
We are also making this film now because 2026 marks one hundred years since Melba gave her final performance at The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden – a stage where she reigned triumphantly for nearly 40 years.
