“It has never been a deadlier time to defend one’s community, way of life or environment… the Philippines is the most dangerous country in Asia to be a land defender.”
These are chilling findings by Global Witness, one of the world’s leading human rights and environment campaigners.
The battles being led by Bobby, Tata and Nieves in DELIKADO are the same as those being fought by local communities in Brazil, Cambodia and elsewhere around the world where corporations and governments are seeking to plunder increasingly valuable natural resources.
They are being killed for trying to stop mining, agribusiness and logging. Many of the deaths occur in remote villages or rainforests. The victims are often from indigenous communities. The killers are rarely caught. All these factors are in play in Palawan.

OUR VISION is to drive support for land defenders and strengthen their efforts to protect their natural environments.
We will utilise the stories of Bobby, Tata and Nieves to drive support for land defenders risking their lives on the frontlines of the fight against climate change, both in the Philippines and around the world. Our campaign will share the message that we must all stand up against corruption, defend human rights and join the fight to protect our planet.

We have an ambitious strategy around our campaign to #DefendtheDefenders to create meaningful change alongside the release of the film. Our goals are to:

-Increase the visibility of Palawan’s land defenders, and support their work to preserve their forests, mountains and mangroves
-Drive support for land defender movements around the world in the fight against climate change
-Challenge corruption and exploitation impacting forests worldwide, and shift the dialogue with key decision makers
-Change mindsets around responsible tourism.

We have established a strong relationship and partnership with Global Witness, one of the world’s most influential environmental and human rights campaigning groups. We have worked closely with Global Witness to gain knowledge about the threats against land defenders in the Philippines and around the world. Global Witness released a major report on land defenders in the Philippines in 2019, which included an investigation into some of the events in Palawan that DELIKADO is documenting.
