First Nations men have been demonised since the Australian colony was first established, labelled as thieves and drunks, the perpetrators of violence and absent fathers; but the truth is that there are so many First Nations men who should be celebrated and heard. Many work tirelessly in extremely difficult situations to strengthen our communities in hope of creating a better world for their children and grandchildren. Dear Son aims to give these men a voice.
Dear Son is a visual exploration of the book of the same title. Written by Thomas Mayo, the book consists of a collection of letters from First Nations men to their fathers or sons, dispelling stereotypes around First Nations masculinity. As Thomas wrote, “These letters are delicate, raw, honest and always loving”. In this screen adaptation, letters penned by inspiring First Nations men will be touchstones to delve into their histories and present lives. Whilst successful in their chosen fields of sports, entertainment, politics and social work, the featured men will share their flaws and vulnerabilities, just as much as their successes.
Dear Son will explore the need to end harmful behaviours such as toxic masculinity, coercive control, misogyny and sexism. Through personal stories, archive, graphics, animation and observational style filming, the series will give a much needed voice to First Nations men. They are ignited with passion for a better future for their children without the trauma their generation has experienced.
