The Code Maker is a compelling six-part series that immerses viewers in the world of endangered languages and their revitalisation. The series follows Professor Ghil’ad Zuckermann’s collaboration with Indigenous communities across the globe. Together, they embark on a journey to unlock the cultural and linguistic codes that bind these communities, revealing their collective efforts to safeguard their cultural heritage and breathe life into languages on the brink of extinction.
Through community leaders, educators, and Ghil’ad’s eyes, the series offers a fresh and inspiring perspective on the global movement to revive endangered languages. From the vast Australian outback to the historical sites of Europe and through the cultural intricacies of Polynesia, Asia, and Africa, The Code Maker traverses diverse landscapes to showcase a powerful narrative of cultural resilience and renewal.
In the series, we will come to understand that speaking your language is your code to understanding your culture. In many cases, Indigenous communities have been forced to abandon their language in favour of the Lingua Franca. Language is wisdom, and the code is a way of life.
In the series, we will be introduced to communities in countries as diverse as Sardinia, Korea, Thailand, Hawaii, China, India, Fiji, Ireland, the USA, and Iceland.
