International Women’s Day 2025
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength, creativity and resilience of women.
“I know that many men and even women are afraid and angry when women do speak, because in this barbaric society, when women speak truly, they speak subversively – they can’t help it: if you’re underneath, if you’re kept down, you break out, you subvert. We are volcanoes. When we women offer our experience as our truth, as human truth, all the maps change. There are new mountains.” – Ursula Le Guin
At Documentary Australia, we are proudly female-founded, female-led, and majority female-staffed, with a gender-equal board and incredible men who stand beside us and champion our work. But beyond this is something even more powerful – women shaping narratives, challenging injustice and driving social change through film.
This International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to elevating women’s voices in film, media and philanthropy, ensuring that the stories that matter get told, seen and acted upon.
Female storytellers shine a light on issues that demand attention. They give voice to the silenced, amplify the marginalised, and create documentaries that spark movements, shift policies and inspire action.
And behind every powerful story is a network of women who advocate for change – the philanthropists, funders and supporters who make these documentaries possible. Their generosity, leadership and belief in the power of storytelling is the driving force behind these films that inform, motivate and create lasting impact.
Today, we honour all these women for their courage, their contributions and their unstoppable determination. Because when women’s voices are heard, the world listens. And when their stories are seen, the world changes.
Help us build the power of the female voice in film and work together to harness this power for much needed social change:
