In the Wake of Giants is a character-led documentary following photographer Jono Allen and marine conservationist Tom Cannon as they travel across the Indo-Pacific exploring how different communities live alongside the ocean.
Connected by the migratory path of the Pygmy Blue Whale, the film moves between Western Australia and Indonesia, where lives, livelihoods, culture, and identity remain deeply tied to the sea.
Along the way, Jono and Tom encounter communities navigating tourism, conservation, cultural change, and growing outside attention. In some places, protection is shaped through regulation and long-standing relationships with Country. In others, the ocean remains inseparable from ancestry, spirituality, and survival.
As the journey unfolds, they find themselves confronting questions with no easy answers. What happens when outside attention arrives in places people believe they are protecting? Who gets to decide what protection should look like? And can communities hold onto agency as the world around them changes?
Moving through these worlds, the film explores the space between preservation and progress, connection and intrusion, and the competing ideas that shape humanity’s relationship with the ocean.
In the Wake of Giants is an observational documentary about visibility, belonging, and the difficult choices facing communities whose futures are increasingly being shaped by forces beyond their control.
