Synopsis

THE BLIND SEA is an inspirational and breathtaking documentary about Australian Matt Formston, 4x World Champion blind surfer. Diagnosed with Macular Dystrophy at age five, Matt shares some of his processes that have enabled him to succeed at the highest level – both in and out of the water, despite facing a lifetime of judgment and prejudice. This thought provoking account explores the remarkable career of one of the greatest blind surfers of all time.
With only 3% vision remaining, Matt aims to inspire the next generation. With insights from World Champions Layne Beachley AO, Sam Bloom, Joel Parkinson and big wave legends Lucas ‘Chumbo’ Chianca and Dylan Longbottom, the film follows Matt around the world, as he pushes his mettle to the limits and attempts his most fearsome and dangerous challenge yet, breaking the world record for a blind surfer and surfing the monster waves of Nazaré.

Story

4x World Champion para world surfer Matt Formston teams up with his shaper and big wave mentor Dylan Longbottom as his mettle is pushed to the limits, charging the gigantic waves of Nazare, Portugal.
At the age of five Matt lost 95% of his vision. Determined to lead a fulfilling life Matt’s parents gave him the tools to take back control and Matt is now determined to prove that disability or not, you can achieve anything if you want it bad enough. In the perfect metaphor demonstrating how the Matt excels in a sighted society, and as a fantastic example of inclusion; Matt builds his capacity by leaning on the expertise of Dylan Longbottom along with guest appearances from Layne Beachley AO, Joel Parkinson, Sam Bloom and Lucas Chumbo. Ultimately enabling him to successfully ride the biggest wave ever ridden by a blind surfer and picking up a world record in the process.
