Maggie’s Music is the world’s first feature-length documentary to explore the use of musical composition as a way of healing trauma and coming to terms with dissociative identity disorder. The documentary delves into the life of Maggie Bell, a woman living with dissociative identity disorder (DID), completing a PhD in music composition at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. As the melodies unfold, Maggie’s Music offers a unique exploration of self-discovery and healing, providing a glimpse into the complexity of her inner world and the diverse musical pieces that emerge from her system of alters. After suffering childhood sexual and psychological abuse since the age of 5 years old, Maggie’s mind split into approximately 60+ personalities to cope with the trauma. After living with DID for nearly 60 years and under the guidance of neuropsychologist Dr Jan Ewing, PHD, for almost 18 years, Maggie has found a unique way of using music composition to embrace her alters and DID and she hopes to inspire others to do the same.
The documentary will investigate the complexity of Maggie’s inner world and the diverse musical talents that emerge from it. It will explore the relationship between different parts or alters that have composed musical scores depending on what experiences/memories/roles they have. The music scores will be recorded by Queensland musicians bringing a richness to the documentary through the multiple layers. The ultimate aim of the documentary is to provide inspiration for others living with dissociative identity disorder to find peace and joy in their lives through their creative pursuits.
