of protagonists, themes and narrative.
It is a story about the experiences of Forgotten Australians, specifically the women/children
in migrant and underclass communities who have lived with the intergenerational trauma of
child institutionalisation.
Gender and identity is a major theme of the work. The creative team is led by Kaz Therese,
a non-binary artist who explores and questions their experiences of gender across
generations of Australian women.
Sleeplessness is focussed on supporting representation and visibility of underrepresente
d women and queer people, exploring the Australian experience of institutionalisation. It
promotes gender equality through creative leadership and contemporary storytelling.
Other themes address diversity in a meaningful way that is inherent to the project. They
include gender, generational trauma, identity, loss, disconnection, family, immigration and
systemic failings of women and immigration.

This project will generate significant cultural value in terms of local storytelling as it
deals with untold issues of Forgotten Australians in NSW, immigration to NSW and three
generations of an NSW family.
Female and non-binary stories are vastly underserved, as are NSW based and set stories
with a female gaze.
The project will be based, filmed and post produced in NSW. All the key creative team
are NSW based, with two team members residing and working in regional NSW. This wi;;
generate economic value to NSW.

At its heart, Sleeplessness is an family and history film of Australian and European cultural
importance, and we believe that although the themes are more directed at women, it will be
of interest to a audience that respond to history, family dramas and mysteries.
