Part mystery, part thriller and part forensic investigation, Sleeplessness uncovers the mystery of Sydney trans artist, Kaz Therese’s lost, Hungarian immigrant grandmother. When Therese discovers the death certificate of a relative who was buried as a German man in a destitute grave in Western Sydney, they begin a profoundly personal 15-year journey, spanning time and place, from Budapest 1920s, their housing commission childhood, and back to present day Sydney. As they uncover family history, forgotten Australians, werewolf lore, fascinating records of bearded ladies, and three generations of family women, Therese also works to discover their own truth.
Through piecing together their family’s erased lives, Therese discovers that this ‘German man’ was actually their lost, Hungarian immigrant grandmother, Lenke Palffy. In learning Lenke’s story, Therese is able to give their grandmother back her life while subsequently redefining their own.
A beautiful, haunting love song to family, love, gender and identity, based on Australian artist Kaz Therese’s acclaimed performance work Sleeplessness.
