Nobody pursues a career in disability support care work seeking fame and public recognition – at least that’s what Mikey Webb thought when he took his first job as an Auslan interpreter at the age of sixteen, after growing up in a family with deaf parents, grandparents, aunties, and uncles.
But when a catastrophic global Covid pandemic disrupts every aspect of society with lockdowns and social distancing, Mikey’s presence as an Auslan interpreter at daily government media updates becomes an unexpected source of reassurance, comfort and hope for many Australians, catapulting interest, and awareness of the Auslan community to new heights.
Now as we navigate our way through life after Covid, where staying indoors is no longer the ‘new normal’, Mikey Webb is on a mission to use his newfound profile and visibility as a ‘household face’ to campaign for increased funding and support for the Auslan community.
