A young girl is drawn into the battle her father fought hard for but lost in WW2 . Having survived malaria, starvation, deprivation, being cannon fodder (as in Gallipoli) and then solitary confinement by the Nazis in war torn Greece in WW2, John Haycroft returns home a decorated hero. But the war within him rages still.
The family is relentlessly buffeted by his catastrophic behaviour, as if under continual shell attack, albeit a silent one in a sleepy Australian country town. His daughter faces the enemy on multiple fronts within their family but when confronted by her fathers defeat at the hands of the unseen enemy – his violence and subsequent suicide -the path of her future life is forever changed. She learns to step in and help those suffering, whilst facing the demons of trauma within herself. We look at trauma from modern day wars and other’s experiences to broaden our understanding of trauma itself, looking at other trauma sources – particular to the Western culture -that create the War Within, looking at the personal, and the national and how we can create real and fundamental change.
