Synopsis
The findings of the Victorian Royal Commission revealed a mental health system that ‘catastrophically failed to live up to expectations’ (ABC, 2021). Sincerely Survivor the Docuseries acts as a common ground for individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges to share their stories and journey towards healing, providing a platform for audiences to learn of alternative expressions of mental health and recovery. Through holding space for the ways in which the mental health system has failed to account for lived experience, Sincerely Survivor the Docuseries will rehumanise the experience of mental distress and support transformation for individuals, workers and the sector alike. We aim to encourage the development of human centred design for the future of the mental health system, in turn promoting new relational models of healing. Together we ask: “what could a mental health system be if it’s designed by and for the people whom it serves?”
This Documentary Series will be co-produced and co-created, documenting the journey of mental health system transformation over time, from the consumer lived experience perspective.
This initial stage of crowdfundraising seeks to fund the Pilot Episode and series proof of concept.

Story
Victoria’s broken mental health system has impacted many – felt by inpatients, communities and clinicians alike. Recommendations from the Royal Commission include a great need for lived experience leadership to emerge as we consider a future of inclusion for all. Community recovery from COVID 19 also presents a new invitation as to how we consider mental health integration and collective healing from past trauma. This docuseries will follow the journey of Hannah Friebel, Lived Experience Consultant, Researcher & Artist, as she explores what lived experience leadership looks like across Victoria. The reform process has been described by some as ‘a train that is departing from the station, and consumers and family/carers have just managed to make it onto the last carriage’. Through the image of a train’s voyage we will explore the full scope of the reform ‘landscape’ and meet with people from the metro, rural and regional areas to discuss what the future of lived experience leadership needs to look like. We will use narrative interviewing techniques and art-based research strategies to explore new and collaborative ways of working. This consumer led film will provide a platform for individuals with diverse experiences of mental health to share wisdom and insights, along with alternative consumer led, owned and driven models of healing, in support of future mental health system transformation.
