An Australian scientist staging world first psychedelic trials hopes to change the course of the mental health epidemic.
As head of Australia’s first psychedelic lab at Monash University, and a principal investigator on six psychedelic trials, Dr Paul Liknaitzky is fast emerging as a leader in this field of research. In a world first, Dr Liknaitzky and his team is trialling the use of psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) alongside pyschotherapy in the treatment of severe generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), and MDMA (ecstasy) for severe PTSD. For this feature length documentary for SBS we have been granted access to the full cohort of trials. We follow Dr Liknaitzky, his team of therapists and hand picked participants – who hope that the world of psychedelic medicine opens up the possibility of tackling their mental health anguish.
