SONGS INSIDE follows a ground-breaking music program for incarcerated women that prepares them to get out of prison—and stay out. Led by First Nations singer-songwriter Nancy Bates, the program culminates in a special collaborative performance with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the first of its kind ever held inside prison walls. The film follows a few of these women through the program and their circumstances, including the difficulties they face after release. It explores the power of music to change lives and poses the question: don’t we all deserve another chance?
I’m a passionate, award-winning and AACTA nominated filmmaker whose documentaries follow memorable characters on transformative journeys and grant unique access inside closed worlds. My trademark lies in my natural ability to form strong and trusting rapport and relationships with my subjects and their environments, which translates directly to the screen. My most recent award-winning documentary PRISONERS AND PUPS (2017, ABC) involved spending three months inside the Adelaide Women’s Prison with my camera following the story of five prisoners who sign up to foster retired greyhounds. In 2020 I received the South Australian Film Corporation’s inaugural Lottie Lyell Award, which is granted to a female filmmaker demonstrating courage and boldness in their work.
