The national underground dance phenomenon of physie has been quietly empowering the nation’s women for over a century. From country halls to the sell out National Finals at the Sydney Opera House, our characters aged 8 – 88, take us beyond the fake tan, and into an unknown world that spans city and country, generations and class. But as the lycra is hand washed and the fishnets are rolled away, they reveal just how vital their connection to this unusual dance sport and community is.
Hilary is a documentary and factual television editor. Recent credits include ‘The Carnival’ – an ob-doc feature doc chronicling 7 years with one of Australia’s oldest carnival families (OFFICIAL SELECTION SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL 2023), ‘Matildas, World at Our Feet’ ( Disney+) – doco series following the Australian Women’s football team as they prepare for the 2023 World Cup, ‘The Australian Wars’ (SBS) – doco series telling the story of Australia’s frontier conflict and, ‘And We Danced’ (ABC) – doco series on the history of the Australian Ballet. Hilary was also nominated for Best Editing in a Feature Documentary for ‘The Skin of Others’ at the Australian Screen Editors Guild awards 2020.
She also turned her hand to directing with her debut documentary, Champion Girls’ (2019), which explores the Australian “girls and ladies only” sport of Physie, which screened on ABC TV for International Women’s Day in 2020, regional cinema screenings and Antenna Documentary Film Festival 2019.
