Ultra-endurance cycling champion Abdullah Zeinab competes in his last race, a torturous transcontinental ride across Europe. He is followed by retired MMA fighter-turned-filmmaker Ben Forsyth, who is in awe of Abdullah’s ability to endure extreme pain in pursuit of victory. But what begins as a film about a bike race, evolves into a raw and intimate portrait of two men questioning how and why they have used extreme sport to define and shape who they are. Why is winning so important? Set against the backdrop of a trans-Europe endurance race, Ultra becomes an exploration of how it’s expectations that are the trap. Ultra’ is not a film about cycling, it’s a film about the lengths one will go to in the pursuit of purpose, meaning and happiness. It is ultimately an exploration of the human condition, delving into the complex tapestry of emotions that shape our existence. At its core, “Ultra” explores the universal struggle with feeling inadequate and the modern-day endemic fuelled by the expectations generated through social media. It is an exploration of modern day masculinity.
