Africa’s most iconic living lion, Jacob, is a global media icon – featured on CNN and the New York Times. He’s also a survivor against all odds.
Nine Lives follows a lion’s epic life adventure through one of the most beautiful but dangerous corners of Africa. After tragically losing a leg in a snare, can the world’s toughest lion triumph over nature and humanity’s fiercest challenges?
Jacob is one of the famous tree-climbing lions of Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, where he defies unimaginable odds to survive. After suffering two brutal injuries from poaching snares—including the amputation of his hind leg—Jacob overcomes physical trauma, threats from rival lions, and human encroachment. His journey across two countries (the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda) is tracked by researchers Dr. Alex Braczkowski and Mustafa Nsubuga, who have worked with the Ugandan government to build community-based conservation programs for lions for nearly a decade. Through Jacob’s resilience, the film reflects the urgent challenges facing East Africa’s lions and the efforts being made to protect them through science, community collaboration, and frontline conservation. Combining eight years of blue-chip footage, interviews from rangers, scientists, and film teams, Nine Lives represents one of the most intimate biographies ever created for an African lion and its habitat in East Africa.
