When Chinese master acrobat Lu Guang Rong came to Australia in the 1980s, he encountered a raw, playful style of circus that was nothing like his disciplined training. Rather than impose his methods, Lu blended ancient Chinese techniques with Australia’s rebellious creative spirit. This cultural fusion transformed Australian circus into a world-class art form, Lu’s students establishing internationally acclaimed companies like CIRCA and Gravity and Other Myths that now tour globally to sold-out audiences. Today, as Lu confronts his greatest challenge—Motor Neuron Disease, his legacy lives on through generations of performers who continue to push the boundaries of what circus can be.
In charting Lu’s story from China to Australia we encounter a young 12 year old student at the Fruit Fly circus, Darcy Grant. Darcy’s creativity takes Lu’s Chinese discipline and expertise to new levels in Circa and Gravity and Other Myths, performing in cutting edge festivals on the world stage.
