SILVER POWER

We urgently need to help the environment on all fronts and, while there are thousands of environment-based groups across Australia, many struggle to get enough volunteers or funding to maximise their impact.

Our project aims activate as many retirees as possible to help the environment though volunteering or financially supporting or donating resources to established environment groups.

The younger generations are well catered for in climate and environment motivating content. However, retirees, at 20% of population, are the generation with the most time and ability to donate or have the knowledge to help environmental groups but many retirees don’t know where to start, so this project addresses that issue.

Silver Power is an impact-driven project aiming to shift the narrative, showing that people 65+ have the experience, time, and resources to drive environmental change.
Phase 1 builds a community through photo stories, text, podcasts, and reels on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
Phase 2 involves creating and screening films, followed by a website that connects users to local environmental groups based on postcode and interest. The website will guide people to organizations and drive up numbers of volunteers and donors.
Phase 3 focuses on film distribution to online communities, film festivals, and niche audiences.
We aim to create a media buzz and activate our audiences wherever we go.
The project’s success will be tracked through event engagement, website traffic, and social media interactions, aiming to spark a nationwide conversation in Australia. The initiative is designed to expand globally, including Silver Power UK and USA.

The project aims to inspire retirees to join their local environment group to give back and find power in their retirement.
We hope to achieve a large spike in volunteers and donations going to groups across Australia with people who were not active, now dedicated to leaving a legacy for their grandchildren.

Producer Ros Walker is in her early 60’s and knows the demographic well, including having toured environmental films through Seniors Week and workign ona project about centenarians and working with the retired family members.
Director Lara van Raay has directed and run impact campaigns for many short films about retirees including Grey Power, about retried activists and Road Kill Warriors about a retired woman tackling the issue of road kill in Tasmania.
Both producers have been building and fostering a relationship with community groups across Australia for this project and are very active in their local environment groups.
We are working with other filmmakers across the country who have direct access to their stories and understand their local area. This relationship to the location will provide access to the community and the subject of each film.

The call to action is simple – join the fight to save the planet through joining a local environment group or supporting them financially.
