Synopsis
On the picturesque Mornington Peninsula, homelessness is often hidden from view. On any night, hundreds of people are sheltering in foreshore dunes, parks, toilet blocks and cars. There is only 1 Crisis Accommodation Centre. Its closure is imminent.
In 2024, Peninsula Films and Mornington Community Support Centre teamed up to create The Ranch, a 35min documentary film about homelessness on the Mornington Peninsula. Hearing first-hand from seven people experiencing homelessness, the film centered around the Ranch Motel, a dilapidated 1970’s 13-room motel. Run by community organisations with no government support, this is the region’s only crisis accommodation.
However, there is more story to tell. The Ranch Motel’s closure is imminent. When bulldozers roll, its residents will be forced back to living on the streets. Meanwhile, without government support, passionate individuals and community organisations are coming together to find local solutions to the housing crisis.
We want to extend the film to 60mins, so we can explore the issues more deeply, reach a wider audience and have more impact.
Story
Prior to the demolition of the Motel, Peninsula Films and Mornington Community Support Centre will connect with the people living there and will ideally follow their journey.
We would also like to reconnect with some of the people from the original short film. For some, the struggle continues, for others, their lives are unrecognisable. Such as Chad, a 60+ year old ex-pro-surfer living in the Rosebud dunes. We captured Chad as he found secure housing, witnessing first-hand the relief and hope he has about his future. Chad now has a home, car, a dog, and is even surfing again – offering inspiration of the change that can happen when a fundamental human right of shelter is met.
There are groups of people that are the most vulnerable and we would like ot hear more from them including, women (age 55+ is the highest growing population of homelessness nationally), children and young mothers.
There are also several stories of community banding together to find a solution, and it would be interesting to follow some of these initiatives too.
