Resilient Hearts follows the Barngarla people of Port Lincoln as they revive their language and cultural heritage, reconnecting to Country, community, and healing. This documentary is both intimate and educational, exploring how language can restore harmony and identity.
At its heart is a remarkable story of revival. In the 1840s, Lutheran missionary Klamor Wilhelm Schürmann recorded a Barngarla dictionary that became the foundation for the tribe’s modern language reclamation. Over a century later, Barngarla elders joined forces with linguist Professor Ghil’ad Zuckermann to bring the words back to life. With community approval, a 15-year journey began.
Resilient Hearts celebrates the strength of Port Lincoln’s community and its support of the Barngarla. Through the voices of traditional owners, family members, psychologists, and local leaders, the film weaves a powerful narrative of survival and renewal.
