The Art Keepers is a documentary series (8x 5min) featuring workers in major art Australian galleries – such as security guards, tradespeople and gardeners – who stumble into their jobs by chance, some having little-to-no previous interest in art. After countless hours on the job they forge deep bonds with precious artworks in the collection. We uncover their personal backstories and a developing love for art which leads to transformational change.
Each episode is set in a major Australian art institution focusing on a main participant (gallery worker). We have confirmed access to in-house tradespeople at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, security guards at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney, and gardeners and an art installer at Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne. We delve into their varied and often surprising personal journeys, how they unintentionally ended up in their job and developed a passion for their favourite artworks. Beyond their individual tales, The Art Keepers underscores the power of art to bridge divides, connect disparate cultures, and create a shared language of human experience with approachable authenticity and subtle humour. Each worker reveals how their new understanding of art impacts their life and we explore accessibility of public art institutions within Australian culture. The Art Keepers aims to shine a light on these workers who are often invisible to the art world; uncovering the transformational impact that art can have, and asking the question – is art for everyone?
The 8x 4min episodes would first launch on each featured art museum’s Instagram channel to reach their large existing audiences in a collaborative post with the dedicated “The Art Keepers” Instagram channel. This would then be followed by distributing full episodes on our YouTube channel, co-hosted by each featured art gallery’s YouTube channels. We will also create shorter cutdown edit versions (approx 1min) to be shared on social media.
