I Got Next is the inspiring story of two childhood friends from inner-city Melbourne who transformed their love of streetball into a cultural movement, creating a lifeline for a generation of outsiders. The film tells the story of the founders of the Summer Jam streetball tournament, Daniel and Eamon, following them from their formative years, hooping on their local court and chasing basketball stardom, through turmoil, setbacks and life’s challenges, to the present, as they stand on the brink of international success, turning their passion for the game into one of the world’s most successful streetball tournaments.
As young boys, Daniel and Eamon spent their days playing ball on their local concrete court filming each other mimicking the tricks of their streetball heroes. Obsessed with American streetball, Michael Jordan, and the world famous AND1 mixtape crew, they were just little kids with big dreams. But for the two friends, and many in their community, options were limited.
The streets pulled at everyone. Some followed. Others hooped.
Over time and through countless challenges, what rose from that cracked concrete court became more than a tournament, it’s a home for an overlooked community and a thriving subculture, born in the margins of Australia and fuelled by powerful untold stories.
Through side stories within the Summer Jam community and streetball legends, I GOT NEXT explores injustices faced by many young Australians while giving underrepresented voices a platform. Through in-depth interviews, a rich tapestry of self-shot archive footage spanning decades, incredible streetball tournament vision, and observational moments following their stories and harsh life realities, a story of hope, resilience, and the power of community and basketball is told.
