Collective Threads is a moving documentary that follows eleven Iranian-Australian refugee and migrant women as they come together to collaborate with award-winning artist Kathrin Longhurst for a landmark exhibition in Sydney during Refugee Week 2025. The film intimately documents the creative process, from the first conversations and portrait sittings to the unveiling of the exhibition, capturing the emotional journey of reclaiming space, voice, and identity in a new country.
Set against the backdrop of global attention on Iranian women’s rights – especially since the death of Mahsa Amini and the subsequent protest – the documentary explores how these women, some recently arrived and others long-settled, share powerful stories of resistance, healing, and hope. Through portrait paintings, spoken-word poetry, music, and video works in both Farsi and English, the women support and encourage each other, forming a circle of solidarity and strength.
The exhibition, and the film, are not just about survival but about visibility and leadership. Many participants are already active in their communities, working in local government, refugee services, or domestic violence support. The documentary highlights their courage and the importance of creating spaces where refugees are seen and heard; not just as survivors, but as artists, advocates, and neighbours.
By following their journeys and the making of the exhibition, Collective Threads offers an inspiring portrait of resilience and the transformative power of art and community. It invites audiences to listen, learn, and take action, reminding us all how fragile freedom can be and how vital it is to celebrate and uplift the voices that have too often been silenced.
