Gil’s political documentaries, Home on the Range and Buried Alive: The Story of East Timor are both award-winners (Greater Union Award 1982 and AFI Award 1989 respectively).

Gil has made documentaries about hippies, tourism and media – Paul’s Blues, The Bad Society, Strangers in Paradise (with Tom Zubrucki).

In 1993, using his AFC Documentary Fellowship Gil made, A Thousand Miles from Care, about a suburban newspaper war.

Gil edited colleagues’ films from the 70’s to the 90’s, cutting award winners like Kemira Diary of a Strike (Dir. Tom Zubrycki).

Over the last 23 years, Gil started Antidote Films, Cinema Ventures and Beamafilm – to address specific needs of documentary film distribution.

For his work in the Australia East Timor Association from ‘91 – ‘97 and for his film Buried Alive, Gil received the Ordem de Timor Leste (2014) awarded by President Taur Matan Ruak.

Gil’s next film: SWINDLE : Australia, East Timor and the Art of the Steal is due for release in 2024
