Synopsis
SYNOPSIS
At a time when sociopolitical landscapes in constant flux appear to control the discourse on LGBTQ+ rights, this film tells the story of how the determination of one man changed the lives of the LGBTQ+ community in a city where they were often forced to live underground, their truth hidden from the world. Sunil Menon, one of India’s leading LGBTQ+ voices, takes us deep into the community in Chennai, India. The film offers a rare and honest insight into their lives, from a time when homosexuality was criminalised under the Indian constitution, to when constitutional change finally arrived as a welcome and long overdue reality. We meet members of the queer and transgender community who share with us what it took for them to transcend constitutional and societal obstacles, violence, and abuse, to affirm their right to live full lives as their authentic selves.

STORY
Sunil Menon, one of India’s leading LGBTQ+ voices takes us deep into the heart of the community for a rare and personal glimpse at the challenge for queer and transgender people to exist with dignity in a world that often seeks to erase or ostracise them. Among those we meet is a transwoman exiled by her family and banned from returning to her village, a trans sex worker who is determined to change the trajectory of her story, a gay man who cannot reveal his true identity to his family for fear of being exiled, a transwoman who fights for the rights of her community at an institutional level, and crisis centre workers faced with young gay and trans people in desperate situations, running away from family violence and abuse, seeking respite, mediation, and support. Sunil’s personal story as a gay man and LGBTQ+ activist determined to transform the lives of the community, anchors this story of resilience, strength, defiance, and even joy in the face of the most impossible of odds.
