Synopsis
When 3 year old Flynn gets Leukaemia (blood cancer), he must take chemotherapy for two years. His devoted mother hopes that with love and laughter, he’ll survive this monumental marathon.
Drawing on her background as a documentary director, Flynn’s Mum uses the camera to understand her family’s absurd new world. By weaving raw tragedy with unimaginable joy and much needed humour, she observes a fiercely resilient family in the throes of crisis.
Using wisdom beyond his years, Flynn learns how to mask the trauma of childhood cancer, by intuitively ‘escaping’ into the heroic world of his imagination. In a separate parallel narrative, animation is used to interpret Flynn’s internal world and is narrated by the voices of Flynn and his big brother.
By interlacing the central observational narrative with Flynn’s internal, animated fantasy world, the film pushes the documentary form to reveal a brave, honest and very personal story. Celebrating love and creativity in equal measure, this life-affirming tale plays out like a real-life, kitchen sink melodrama.
Story
The film centres on Flynn, following his treatment journey through an intimate, observational lens grounded in real-life access to hospital, home, and family environments. The narrative is structured around his experience of illness and the way he processes uncertainty, fear, and disruption to everyday childhood.
A key creative device is the use of animation to externalise his inner world. These sequences represent his imagination and intelligence as a form of escape and self-protection from trauma—transforming medical procedures, hospital routines, and moments of anxiety into expansive, stylised worlds where he regains control and agency. The animation becomes a parallel narrative, revealing how a highly perceptive, “genius” mind reinterprets his reality to survive it emotionally.
In contrast, the live-action footage remains restrained and observational, capturing the grounded reality of treatment and family life. Supporting characters, including parents, siblings and medical staff.
