Violence against women is still escalating. The number of deaths in Australia has risen from sixty-four in 2023 to seventy-eight in 2024. Women’s House in Brisbane is a trailblazer in addressing this issue and has offered ways to freedom from domestic and gendered violence for thousands of women and children since 1975.
The current generation of front-line workers running Women’s House are preparing for the 50th anniversary of this groundbreaking organisation. Four story arcs intertwine: The event preparations, the work at Women’s House, a standout case they have worked through and their journey from a one-telephone room to several city-wide services.
The event planning is chaotic. As Women’s House workers balance their workloads, more calls come in from women in unsafe circumstances. Kate works at Women’s House. She wants a comedy workshop for the workers to lighten things up and finds out that one of her co-workers does stand-up. A side-chat develops to bring some comedy into the 50th anniversary so they approach Mandy Nolan.
At stake for the big commemoration day, is whether their elders can attend. Founding members are getting old. Karin was at Women’s House when many of these women were still active and she goes to them to glean what they have to offer the current generation. The elders have put a lot of hard work into creating and maintaining the non-violent, collective way of working, a process that is still in play. The anniversary is a good time to examine how it has worked over the decades.
Modeled on Elsie’s House in Sydney, this grassroots organisation is maintained, through the seventies and into the eighties, with no substantial funds. It has not been a smooth ride. Arguments erupt, even wars, in this place of pacifist intent.
After the chaos of the preparations, the 50th anniversary event allows space for thought. They draw strength from remembering how they have confronted challenging times like this, when our communities still strive for safety.
