Georgie Stone OAM is an Australian actress, writer and transgender rights advocate. At the age of 10, Stone was the youngest person to receive hormone blockers in Australia, which set a precedent that eventually changed the law. She continues to advocate for transgender children, and is one of the most visible transgender people in Australia.
Now the documentary, The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone, has gone a step further: it has taken her story – which she is in control of – to the world, reaching millions. The 28-minute film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was screened at Sydney, Melbourne and Perth Revelations festivals and in the Australian federal parliament, premiering on Netflix worldwide in September 2022.
In support of the movement for trans rights, The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone has earned the support of some of Australia’s most powerful people and is contributing to raising awareness and change making. Through partnerships with key trans-lead organisations including Transcend and The Gender Centre, the documentary has amplified the voices of trans people and connected audiences to resources for allyship and advocacy, connecting to health services and those in policy to push for change.
“She’s an incredible young woman,” said Senator Louise Pratt in parliament in November 2022 about Georgie Stone while introducing a speech from Georgie that she read out on the floor of the Australian Senate. “The documentary, Directed by Maya Newell, I believe is the perfect catalyst to invite you to not only stand in solidarity, but actively support one of the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in Australia: trans kids.”
The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone is already having an impact beyond parliamentary endorsement and Netflix’s global audience with Stone, who turns 23 in May 2023, the youngest person named in the Sydney Morning Herald’s “25 women reshaping Australia” in 2022. In April 2023 the project will publish the Dreamlife zine which has been created by a committee of young trans and gender diverse people and will be launched at Sydney World Pride.
“Growing up as a transgender kid in Australia, I never really knew anyone like me. Despite having the support of my family, I felt isolated and alone. I couldn’t see a future for myself. So much of this, I believe, is because of the lack of positive trans representation on screen and in the media. For me, this film is about taking the power back. To have agency over my story, for the first time in my life, has been such an empowering experience.”
