As the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus approaches, Australian Greek Cypriots – aged 70 to 102 – give eyewitness accounts of Cyprus and their migration to Australia. Three migrated in the 1950s; three are 1974 refugees. They have survived great loss but are hopeful their beloved island will one day become reunited. TWO HOMELANDS intercuts rare archives with personal stories. With pathos and humour, the film will touch the hearts of all Cypriots. For others, it will shine a light on an occupation that remains illegal and unjust. Cyprus is geo-strategic in a region where many conflicts remains unresolved. TWO HOMELANDS reflects on the futility of war and the human cost 50 years after the bombs have stopped dropping.
Kay Pavlou is a multi-award-winning director and writer of drama and documentary for the both television and cinema. In documentary, Kay has written and directed GHOST TOWN (2022) and CYPRUS – A PEOPLE DIVIVED (1990). Kay was series director for the six-part documentary series RACE TO LONDON (2012). She’s written and directed 12 episodes of the documentary series WHOD DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? – including Adam Goodes and Toni Collette – as well as RECOGNITION – YES OR NO?, FAMILY FOOTSTEPS 2, DESPERATELY SEEKING SHEILA, GANGS OF OZ, CHINA – MONUMENTAL VISION, UNDER ONE ROOF, PIRATE PATROL.
In drama, Kay has directed ALL SAINTS, MCLEOD’S DAUGHTERs and LOVE IS A FOUR LETTER WORD. Kay’s short film, THE KILLING OF ANGELO TSAKOS and her feature film, MARY, both produced by Rosemary Blight of Goalpost Pictures, were released to local and international acclaim.
