Viewing our history where it happened is now technically possible. Using video we showcase a history so that tourists have enriched experience, communities document their history and students learn and co-create.
A short summary of the issue the documentary is addressing
We work with students to create community histories available in 3 minute video stories on Indigenous histories, Migrant and colonial and personal stories for education and for tourism.
What is the impact vision statement of the documentary?
We wish to collect video histories and empower communities to tell their own so we are better informed about our past which will help us inform our future. Our vision is that each community across Australia will know it's Indigenous history, it's colonial history and understand the richness of their own communities. This enables a sense of 'shared history', a contribution to a sense of uniqueness in the community and helps build on social cohesiveness.
What outcomes does the project hope to achieve from making this documentary?
These films will make us aware through efficient storytelling about the history within our communities. The amount of times people say they didn't know the histories we present although having lived there for 20 years is astounding. In knowing our history we are richer, we grow in empathy towards the people around us, we have a sense of shared history within our community and why it sets us apart. In wanting to document our history, we hope young people will be inspired to tell their own stories increasing content production about history. In our fast paced changing society and the rise of digital influence into our lives, understanding our local history should be very much a part of our lives.
How will this documentary achieve its outcomes?
We will be available as an app for people to both view and upload to. We will work with students to produce content and we will market these stories. Directly linked to views, we aim to reach as many people as possible within each location to see and share their stories and make this project a marketable project for councils and tourist organisations to market their own histories through co-sharing.
How will partnerships with this project help inform the project development?
Yes we have a number of partnerships including with online history groups, destination and tourist organisations, museums, the university and we work closely with mentors including Indigenous elders, the National Trust and trusted historians.
Audience Engagement and Social Impact
What actions does this project hope for its viewers after seeing this film?
We hope they visit the site where the stories are located and we are working on a gameplay element for this app for this.
Measurement and Evaluation
What is the projects indicators for success?
When we continue to make inroads into new communities for further story production, that students will showcase this history and sign up and that we have over 5000 downloads of the app.
