Synopsis

DURATION: 90 MINUTES

THIS IS REALITY is the story of an ex-resistance fighter turned performance artist who creates East Timor’s first reality TV show to confront his past.

East Timor endured a brutal 24-year Indonesian occupation from 1975-1999 in which over 200,000 people were killed or disappeared.

Few carry the scars more distinctively than Osme Gonsalves, a celebrated artist, singer, poet, actor, and prominent ex-resistance fighter, who struggles to find peace despite the goal of sovereignty being reached. Frustrated by his nation’s perceived apathy, Osme creates a reality TV show to travel the districts and interview the population about the contemporary reality of their lives under the alter-ego of reporter Rambo Marabunta.

This is an immersive story pulling the audience into the mind of a man living with invasive personal trauma, bravely facing his own demons to deliver a love letter to the nation he fought to free. It is also a timely message of peace and reconciliation.

Issue Summary

A short summary of the issue the documentary is addressing

Both the feature film and reality TV show are designed to inspire the East Timorese to take pride in their unique national identity, interrogate their recent history, and ultimately increase their understanding of the impact the independence struggle has had on the nation’s psyche. This film is a bold promotion of freedom of expression in East Timor, a relatively new right in a nation which spent four centuries occupied by foreign powers. Open discourse and the cultivation of national identity will be crucial in avoiding future conflict for this tiny nation, whose economic future is precarious. The 2006 Dili riots serve as a timely reminder of the consequences of societal disunity left ignored.

This film also has an important role to play amongst an international audience and will suit a broad range of enthusiastic cinema goers open to an insightful and creative narrative.

Outcomes

What outcomes does the project hope to achieve from making this documentary?

This film also has an important role to play amongst an international audience and will suit a broad range of enthusiastic cinema goers open to an insightful and creative narrative. However the goal is not simply to create experimental cinema. We aim to show audiences the value that art and culture-building practices can have in rehabilitation and conflict prevention, whilst educating audiences on the important historical and psychological lessons we can all from East Timor’s journey.

Ultimately this film will convey an important truth to international audiences by demonstrating the damaging footprint that self-serving foreign policies can have on smaller nations. East Timor’s struggle is a raw example of how the blind pursuit of economic stability for some nations, can predispose others to long-term instability including the horror of genocide.

Stakeholders

How will partnerships with this project help inform the project development?

We have a letter of interest from PBS in USA through their POV division. And are confirming an offer of financial support from US production comp-any Ryot. Also in communication with Film Vic and Screen
