Tenacious! is a documentary about self-discovery and empowerment amidst a sea voyage on one of the largest wooden tall ships in the world. This documentary will capture the deeply moving and personal transformative experiences of those on board via the wholly immersive Virtual Reality (VR) platform. With VR, the audience can take the same emotional journey as the men and women involved. They will witness first-hand the purpose of the ship and the Jubilee Sailing Trust - to be a catalyst for change in perceptions of what living with disability means and what the human spirit is truly capable of. The documentary follows three people living with disability in their everyday lives – lives often defined by a lack of belief in their own potential. An embedded film crew will accompany the three individuals on the ship and document their incredible inner transformation and outward journey, as well as document reflections from close friends or colleagues that have joined them. After the voyage,
A short summary of the issue the documentary is addressing
JST has been changing lives for over thirty years, taking more than 45,000 people on their very own adventure across the high seas. It’s no secret that sailing will change perceptions both of your own ability and of those around you, regardless of physical ability. The reach and impact of the two tall ships JST operates can be significantly amplified through the power of VR and documentary filmmaking by taking viewers on a narrative-driven, fully immersive journey with those on board the ship, to witness first hand the impact and change on lives. Our key goal of the documentary is to create the kind of positive impact these journeys have on a global scale, with VR being a powerful and accessible medium for both people living with disability as well as able bodied viewers.
What is the impact vision statement of the documentary?
Considering that one-in-four of us is close to a person with a disability, it is amazing that there is still that element of prejudice, misconception about ability, and a lack of awareness of the things that can make life inclusive. The JST is here to build the bridges of awareness and understanding and by using two fantastic, specially designed ships.
What outcomes does the project hope to achieve from making this documentary?
Operating two tall ships, the Tenacious and the Lord Nelson, the JST has achieved a significant impact over their 40 years of operation. Yet the greater reach and impact of these sailing voyages remains bound by the limitation of how many voyages these ships can sail in a year, and how many people each sailing voyage can accommodate. By capturing the experience in a crafted VR narrative experience, we aim to take the mission and impact beyond the ship; using the portability of VR, we aim to significantly extend the reach and impact of these voyages to a global audience, including campaigns and popups in enterprise businesses, film festivals and community centres.
How will partnerships with this project help inform the project development?
This documentary is being developed directly in conjunction with the Jubilee Sailing Trust.
Audience Engagement and Social Impact
What actions does this project hope for its viewers after seeing this film?
During JST sailing adventures people become deeply immersed in an intense, challenging experience in an unpredictable environment. Participants work together in diverse teams to perform tasks with real responsibilities. Everyone is seen and treated as equal and contributes to the best of their ability. On the level playing field created aboard the ships, barriers break down, differences disappear and friendships form. By transporting audiences into a VR experience and taking an equivalent journey, we seek to create the same impact and lasting impression on viewers: an increased awareness of the boundless nature of the human spirit, and embracing a greater sense of diversity in teams and teamwork.
Measurement and Evaluation
What is the projects indicators for success?
Running diversity and inclusion campaigns in conjunction with major enterprises, a major indicator of our success and impact will be through feedback and impressions from staff and viewers in the months following the campaign. Seeing a measurable rise in the opportunities for people living with disability within these organisations is a key success metric we will focus on.
