Khaled fought against the “beast” of terror when working as an interpreter for the Coalition Forces in Iraq. Born Iraqi but raised in the Netherlands he believes in Western ideals of freedom like any Dutchman. But Khaled couldn’t escape the legacy of violence and spends the next 10 years travelling across 4 continents in search of safety. In the age of terror, Khaled is someone to be feared and is treated inhumanely. In 2015 he documents his quest to return home. Will he find sanctuary and have the life he always deserved or will he finally crack and become the “beast” they all fear him to be?
A short summary of the issue the documentary is addressing
SANCTUARY gives a face to the faceless and a voice to the voiceless. The audience has the rare opportunity to connect with the humanity of an asylum seeker by getting to know and care about Khaled’s personal story. Philanthropic Foundations that advocate for the rights of asylum seekers will support a documentary that humanises such individuals. It is difficult for the Australian public to stand by and allow the abuse of another human being once they get to know them and witness their shared humanity. SANCTUARY does not seek to take a political stance on what is a humanitarian issue; the film seeks to reveal the impact of border protection policies on the human rights of one individual. This is just one man’s story but it is an avenue to creating greater awareness about the impact of our policies and practices on future and current asylum seekers who find themselves in Australia’s detention centres.
