  • DIRECTOR Gwen Sputore

  • PRODUCER Veronica Sive

NextGen Rising is a creative grassroots participatory feature film and series with a thematic focus on the next generation's perspective on the climate emergency.

Similar in process to the feature film “One Day on Earth”, we aim to mobilise a diverse range of multicultural, multidisciplinary creatives and dare them to ask the difficult questions about their future.

Stories will start in Australia and then spread out as we connect with creatives worldwide - from social media personalities, filmmakers, writers, singers, dancers, painters, photographers, comedians, animators and performers and through their eyes and voices we will foster an inventive, imaginative, originative exploration of the global climate emergency.

OUTCOME - HYBRID FILM & SERIES: Content produced by creatives globally will be edited into a hybrid film and series, which will further highlight the interconnectedness of our planet.

As a collective of filmmakers, this is our contribution to making a difference by providing an opportunity for us all as creatives to be advocates in the climate conversation.

Issue Summary

A short summary of the issue the documentary is addressing

Ten years ago, produced a documentary series highlighting the looming human-generated environmental disasters, some of which have sadly come to bear.

Alarmingly, addressing climate change remains the most urgent issue we face today.

We believe creatives can be the drivers of transformation and rally people by inspiring action.
For this new generation of creatives, this collaboration will enable them to showcase their work in the fight for a sustainable future.

Creatives own content could be anything - a short-form documentary, comedy sketch, mockumentary, dramatized-performance, active-challenge, narrative-based storytelling, or music clips.... paintings, sculptures, animation, photographs, poems - all captured as screen content.

Combined into a film and series we believe audiences will respond to the discussion about the climate emergency when explored in a dynamic, personal, entertaining and creative way.

What is the impact vision statement of the documentary?

The empowerment of next-generation of creatives, relative to climate change and civic engagement, is at the heart of NextGen Rising. The clear demonstration of the creative's passion, courage and tenacity is the greatest hope for a better future. As global creatives engage - could we see real change?

What outcomes does the project hope to achieve from making this documentary?

Our aim is for this to be a collective, a collaboration to allow creatives to inspire action and drive transformation, in the fight for a sustainable future.

NextGen Rising is all about giving a platform for the next generation of creatives to inspire change.

Their content will reflect their thoughts, hopes, and fears on the climate emergency.

By enabling creatives to reflect on environmental issues their work has the potential to move the debate from the abstract and science to each individual person.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed, it's time to bring creatives together as citizens of a mass movement of transformation, part of the bigger movement - as campaigners for an optimistic future.

How will partnerships with this project help inform the project development?

Focusing on Partnership with:
- global creatives and production companies to bring together the diverse inspiring content.
- aspiring social justice companies, who believe in the greater calling than simply making a profit and business practices that support grassroots organizing for social and environmental justice.
- educational leaders who will use the film/series to inspire other creatives to produce content on an ongoing basis.

Audience Engagement and Social Impact

What actions does this project hope for its viewers after seeing this film?

Empower creative people to realise they have the power and potential to make a difference. We can’t predict exactly how the future will look if the current lack of action continues, but we know it doesn’t look good.

The next generation might be scared, might be outraged, but they can take real definitive action on climate change now, by being part of the conversation.

Creatives are global citizens and by standing up for what they believe in, for the future of the planet and for themselves they can inspire and inform others. This is all about inspiring the conversation and taking away the fear of not being heard.

If we can move the conversation about the environment emergency away from what if and science to the personal and highlight the interconnectivity of all of us on the planet as a whole, we may be able to help the planet yet.

Measurement and Evaluation

What is the projects indicators for success?

Audience engagement will be judged by social media engagement, sharing and screening attendance. The social media campaign will start at the outset even before creatives start creating the content and will continue through the production release. We will leverage the exposure through the involvement of talent and creatives - eg musicians/actors/comedians who already have a following. Success will be achieved by expanding the conversation and inspiring change.
