A lonely housewife’s plan to end it all takes an unexpected turn when her last hurrah begins a radical journey of sexual exploration and personal re-invention. After 20 years as a dutiful housewife stuck in a loveless, sexless marriage, Morgana has had enough of her dreary life. Desperately lonely and starved of intimacy, she books a male escort for one last hurrah before ending it all. Her final night takes an unexpected turn when her relationship with the escort opens up a new world of personal and sexual freedom. After hearing about a competition for first time erotic filmmakers, Morgana directs and stars in a film about her own story, ‘Duty-Bound’. Unexpectedly her film wins, catapulting her into the international Feminist Porn community. Life merges with art as Morgana uses erotic filmmaking as a tool for creative catharsis, while struggling with demons from her past.

BEHIND THE SCENES
A short summary of the issue the documentary is addressing
Through our character Morgana, we explore universal themes such as aging and sexuality, the human need for intimacy and touch, loneliness and isolation and the hunt for community and belonging. The film is a primary source for the timely discussion about what it means to be a ‘good women’ in the face of unprecedented personal freedom and choice. Once a woman’s social contract as wife and mother is complete, we examine how much of a burden social expectations play on the ability for women to seek pleasure and fulfillment. Morgana’s personal journey touches upon late in life LGBTQI+ awakenings and how art and mental health intersect. Set against a backdrop of new wave sex-positive feminism, Morgana challenges the current representations of female sexuality in media, which are primarily shown through a male gaze and lacking in diversity of body types, skin colour and ages.
What is the impact vision statement of the documentary?
Our desired outcome is to have our project facilitate strong discussions around the core themes of aging & sexuality, sex positivity, male gaze dominated representation in pornography of a female sexuality that doesn’t reflect the majority of women, mental health, human isolation in modern times & LGBTQI+. Morgana’s journey touches on these themes in a very organic and relatable way, opening the door to personal sharing, facilitating increased understanding, group empathy and compassion.
What outcomes does the project hope to achieve from making this documentary?
Short term outcomes: Our marketing campaign during the films festival run will target women, include social and traditional press coverage, aid candid online discussions around sex and sexuality and create new pathways for others of a similar age wanting to explore their sexuality. We will show younger people how sexual exploration doesn't have to end at a ‘certain age’.
Medium Term Outcomes: We will continue our outreach into smaller, niche female/feminist/queer spaces, encouraging live discussions around aging and sexuality themes, enabling an emotionally connected space that can break down barriers.
Long Term Outcomes: We plan to continue offering our educational package as a tool for university level graduates across multiple disciplines, i.e. (sociology, pornography studies, film studies, women's studies, sex therapy etc.) We intend to maintain the social media forums well past the film’s first year of distribution and continue to build a community of supportive people.
How will partnerships with this project help inform the project development?
We have warm connections with ethical pornographers, academics, sex educators and indie erotic film festivals from around the world. These communities are keen to have their voices amplified around the importance of critical porn analysis and porn literacy programmes by sex-positive institutions.
Audience Engagement and Social Impact
What actions does this project hope for its viewers after seeing this film?
Our audience engagement strategy is centred around the internal experience of individuals and the power of group conversation, bringing out into the open an often closed area of life. There is no central movement that is sex-positive, but our conversation based dialectic approach is geared towards broadening people's minds about the importance of healthy sexualities and intimacy, through engaged discussion. These discussions will be on multiple platforms, live at cinema screenings, online via our website and social media pages, as well as during special interest and educational events. On our website we will be collating resources to point audiences to who are hungry for more information to further their understanding of sex-positivity, and/or who may want to explore themselves.
