From the Dandenong Ranges to Sydney’s northern beaches, from rural pastures to an inner city flat - a single day unfolds for five women in the throes of motherhood. Whilst tending to the relentless demands of the day, they are determined to rise above the struggles that are close to their heart. Whether faced with disability, or their own anxieties, a weight-preoccupied teen or the biases of others, they are forced to deconstruct and redefine some of our culture’s most sacred ideals.

Issue Summary

A short summary of the issue the documentary is addressing

Parenthood often confronts us with the unresolved issues in our society:
Whether it’s rising levels of anxiety and depression, rampant dissatisfaction with body, prejudice, or social exclusion - our children bring home the big issues of our time, making them personal and burning.

A Certain Mother will address five central issues, exploring the challenges and complexities that these present when raising our children:

Body image
Mental Health

Through the stories of mothers who have found these issues at the heart of their parenthood, we will seek to answer the questions and dilemmas that many parents face:

How do we raise our children to be comfortable in their skin?
How can we help them cope better with the world they are growing into?
What can I do to rise above gender-bias and help build a generation that has more me-neithers and less me-toos?
What is, really, my role here?

What is the impact vision statement of the documentary?

A Certain Mother will support and inspire parents who are facing similar issues, by sharing a collection of powerful personal stories.

The film will prompt all of us to reconsider some of our previously held views, exposing the fault lines in our culture, and instigating small changes within.

As we thread the stories together, we will see the shared human experience of motherhood, one that transcends our personal, particular circumstances, and inspires a sense of connection.

What outcomes does the project hope to achieve from making this documentary?

The primary outcome is to strengthen the support for parents/carers as they face the issues addressed in the film - offering them a new light with which to see these challenges, and a wealth of insights on how to cope with them.

The secondary outcome is to spark conversations in the wider community by reframing the way we view these issues, and to encourage parents/carers to take an active and thoughtful parental role in regards to these.

Finally, the film will connect the audience with relevant organisations, amplifying their messages and providing the viewer with tangible ways to take action and promote change.

How will this documentary achieve its outcomes?

- Organisational partnerships will help connect the film to the relevant communities.
- Our impact partners will each have a short clip for their relevant story, so that they can use it for fundraising and educational purposes.
- We will hold targeted screenings for the communities involved in the issues.
- We will employ a broader social media strategy, and create media partnerships, in order to reach the wider target audience.
- We will launch a website with the film, in order to allow for direct engagement, and to link viewers with the support organisations, with our impact partners, and with online resources

How will partnerships with this project help inform the project development?

We are in discussion with a number of key partners, and are working with them to identify how we can amplify their messages and work to support the work they do. We want our partners to use the film to help raise awareness and action on their issues.
